APL Construction has recently completed specialist drainage improvement works at Edgelaw Reservoir in partnership with AG Wilson Civil Engineering on behalf of Scottish Water.
The project involved replacing existing drainage pipes located on the face of the dam. Due to strict operational constraints designed to protect the integrity of the structure, no heavy machinery or vibration-inducing equipment was permitted on the dam. As a result, all excavation works were undertaken manually, with some sections requiring hand digging to depths of approximately 1.5 metres.
To support the operation while maintaining the safety and stability of the dam, a DISAB vacuum truck was positioned away from the structure to remove excavated material and deliver backfill via extended hoses. Scaffold stair systems were also installed to provide secure and controlled access for the workforce.
Despite the technical and logistical challenges, the project was completed safely and efficiently, demonstrating APL Construction’s ability to adapt to complex site constraints while maintaining high standards of delivery and safety.
